Shreya Bhat is pursuing a PhD in Comparative Gender Studies at the Central European University. Her multi-sited ethnographic research explores the social dimension of remittance transfers from Southern Europe to West Africa. She explores the engagement of West African migrant workers in formal and informal economies in Italy, and their utilisation of money transfer services to remit money to family members across borders. Specifically, she documents how money remitted by Nigerian migrant workers shapes care provisioning within the household in Nigeria, and brings about a restructuring of gendered responsibilities within the family economy. Broadly, her research interests include gender and migration, transnational households, remittances, irregular migration from West and North Africa, and migration governance along the Central Mediterranean Route. In the past, she has worked with migrant sex workers as a social worker in non-governmental organisations in India, with the International Organisation for Migration's (IOM) DTM and Research Unit for Libya, the Danish Refugee Council’s Mixed Migration Centre (Asia and the Pacific), and the Migration Policy Institute.
